Campsite Rodez
The historical center of Rodez
Formerly the main stake of the rivalry between the counts of Rodez “masters of the town” and the bishops of Rodez “masters of the city”, the city shelters a rich cultural and architectural heritage which testifies to its prestigious past.
To realize it, just walk in the streets and alleys around the cathedral, around the place du Bourg and that of Olmet. We discover the old half-timbered houses, mansions and mansions of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that the good fortunes of Rouergue, merchants, merchants and bankers, build in the Bourg and the City.
The Maison d’Armagnac, one of the oldest buildings in the city, is a fine example of this. Built on the ruins of the castle of the Counts of Armagnac, the building combines with charm Gothic and Renaissance style.
A little further on, one reaches the rue Penavayre where the Canonical House is located, former residence of the canons of Rodez in the 15th century. In the courtyard, you can observe a sandstone well decorated with the shell of St. James, symbols of the pilgrims of Compostela.
Right next to the cathedral, you can discover the old bishop’s palace, the only brick building in Rodez. Built in the 17th century in the Louis XIII style, the palace has a double-flight staircase that is reminiscent of that of the Château de Fontainebleau.

The Soulages museum and the other museums of Ruthenias
Among the museums which make the fame of Aveyron, the Musée Soulages certainly deserves the visit for its very particular atmosphere and its outstanding architecture.
We discover the work of the artist Pierre Soulages, father of the outrenoir and contemporary French artist among the most quoted on the international market. Exceptional collections of paintings, etchings, lithographs, serigraphs and sculptures are here superbly enhanced by skillful plays of light.
If modern art is not really your cup of tea, you may prefer the fenaille museum, dedicated to the history of Rouergue and archaeology. The place gathers the largest collection of menhir statues in France!
In another decor and another atmosphere, the museum Denys-Puech, in spite of its modest size, presents some very beautiful bronze sculptures from the middle of the XIXth century until today.
